Press outlets, citing commercial tracking and OSINT channels, identify the vessel as the Saudi-owned VLCC Amzan (IMO 9693745), managed by Bahri. UKMTO itself has not confirmed the identity. No Bahri company statement naming the ship appears in the current pack.

Yanbu and the East-West pipeline

Yanbu is Saudi Arabia’s principal crude-export terminal on the Red Sea. It is the western terminus of the East-West Crude Oil Pipeline, also known as the Petroline. The line runs roughly 1,200 km from the Abqaiq processing complex in the Eastern Province to Yanbu. It was built in the early 1980s during the Iran–Iraq War specifically to give Saudi crude an export route that does not pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

The system consists of two parallel pipes. Nameplate capacity has been raised over time to approximately 7 million barrels per day when both lines are configured for crude. Sustainable export capacity at the Yanbu terminals themselves is lower — typically cited in the 4–5 million bpd range under normal conditions — and becomes the practical constraint once the pipeline is running hard. West-coast refinery intake also absorbs part of the flow before the berths.

In 2026, with transit through the Strait of Hormuz restricted, the Petroline has been operated at or near full capacity. Yanbu loadings rose sharply. The port and the pipeline together form the main Saudi bypass of the Strait. That is why a projectile strike in the approaches to Yanbu matters operationally: the alternative route itself is now under pressure.
